CALGARY — New Flames starting goaltender Mike Smith won't be losing sleep over his less than ideal start to the pre-season.

EDMONTON — Mark Letestu is hoping his pre-season start is a sign of things to come. Letestu scored a pair of goals as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2 in a split-squad pre-season game on Monday.

WINNIPEG — Ryan Malone found a good way to get noticed in his come-back attempt with the Minnesota Wild.

OTTAWA — Mike Hoffman scored twice as the Ottawa Senators opened the pre-season with a 6-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Monday night. Mark Stone, Tyler Randell, Gabriel Gagne, Cody Ceci also scored for Ottawa.

QUEBEC — Tim Schaller's short-handed goal in the second period lifted the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens in NHL pre-season action on Monday night.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Wild and captain Mikko Koivu have agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract extension. The Wild announced the deal on Monday night. The 34-year-old Koivu was entering the final season of his contract.

About to turn 37 years old, Henrik Sedin didn't sound overly thrilled about the prospect of having to fly across the Pacific Ocean to play a couple of exhibition games ahead of the gruelling NHL season.
