Vehicle taken without permission, driver charged with impaired

OPP responded to a report of someone abandoned at a rest area on Manitoulin Island; their vehicle had been taken by their partner

LITTLE CURRENT - The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested five people for impaired driving between July 21 and July 22, 2023. The Manitoulin OPP has laid 44 impaired driving charges since Jan. 1, 2023.

On July 22, 2023 shortly after 11 p.m., the Manitoulin OPP responded to a report that a person had been abandoned at a rest area on Highway 6 in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. Their vehicle had been taken without permission by their partner.

Police located and arrested the driver at a nearby trailer park. It was determined the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages and was impaired. The driver was transported to the Little Current OPP detachment for further tests.

As a result of the investigation, a 36-year-old from Oshawa was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs  
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
    •    Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
    •    Take motor vehicle without consent
    •    Driving while under suspension

The accused was released and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Aug. 23, 2023. Due to the domestic nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Drivers are reminded that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan not to drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver or take a taxi.

If you observe a suspected impaired driver, please call 9-1-1 immediately and report it.
