Heroin, crystal meth and weapons seized during drug bust

A 25-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man face several charges relating to opioid trafficking

ESPANOLA - On Nov. 27, 2019 at approximately 1:01 a.m. a member of the Manitoulin (Espanola) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) initiated a vehicle stop in the Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers, Ont.

Further investigation revealed that the driver and the passenger were in possession of suspected controlled substances and weapons. The officer seized a quantity of suspected oxycodone, heroin and crystal meth, a knife and some cellphones.

Officers arrested and charged Amelia Abitong, 25 years old, of the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation, Ont.; and Justin Solomon, 36 years old, of the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation, with the following:
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - heroin contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - other drug contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - Opioid (other than Heroin) contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
    •    Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose contrary to section 88 of the CC.

The accused were released on a Promise to Appear and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Dec. 16, 2019.
