Truck hits hydro pole, driver charged with impaired

Police say the accused also drove through numerous yards and hit a parked car

On June 4, 2022 at approximately 1:05 a.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call regarding a pickup truck that had crashed into a hydro pole on Axmith Avenue in Elliot Lake.

A homeowner reported that a pickup truck had driven through numerous yards, collided with a parked car, and then hit a hydro post. The pickup truck was smoking and the post was on top of it. Witnesses observed a female driver exit the pickup truck and was not injured. Police administered an approved screening device which resulted in a fail. As a result, the driver was arrested and the vehicle was towed and impounded.

Melissa Cyr, 36 years old from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on July 5, 2022.
