Trespassing leads to theft charges, say police

Police say the complainant reported viewing video surveillance of a person entering the store and stealing numerous items

On April 4, 2022, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a trespass and theft related occurrence at a retail store on Highway 108 in Elliot Lake. 

The complainant reported viewing video surveillance of a person entering the store and stealing numerous items. Police viewed the video and recognized the person. On April 5, 2022 at approximately 4:30 p.m. police located the person walking on Hutchison Avenue and was subsequently arrested.

Joe Newton, 62 years old, of Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Theft Under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Enter Premises When Entry Prohibited, contrary to section 2(1)(a)(i) of the Trespass to Property Act

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on May 3, 2022.
