Traffic stop on Highway 108 leads to drug charges

Police have charged 39-year-old Zeth Laking with multiple drug-related charges following a traffic stop on June 10, a news release issued today stated. 

After investigating the vehicle, police found the accused to be in possession of approximately 60 suspected methamphetamine pills, over 134 grams of suspected cocaine and crack cocaine, a digital scale, and over $2000 in cash, the release stated.

On June 10, 2022, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting regular patrol duties on Highway 108 in Elliot Lake. 

A small car was observed travelling on Mountain Road and police knew this vehicle was being driven by an unlicensed driver. Police conducted a subsequent traffic stop and spoke to the driver.  It was confirmed the driver was suspended and was therefore arrested. After investigation, the driver had in their possession; approximately 60 suspected methamphetamine pills, over 134 grams of suspected cocaine and crack cocaine, a digital scale, and over $2000 in cash. The vehicle was also towed and impounded.  

Zeth Laking, 39 years old, of Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Driving While Under Suspension (three counts) contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake, on Aug. 9, 2022.
