Traffic stop leads to licence suspension for Espanola driver

ESPANOLA - On April 11, 2020 at approximately 10:39 p.m., an officer from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a vehicle for a Highway Traffic Act (HTA) infraction on Lee Valley Road, Espanola.

It was determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol. The driver refused to provide a breath sample.

As a result, Heather Caldwell, 36 years old from Espanola, has been charged with:
    •    Failure or refusal to comply with demand contrary to section 320.15(1) of the Criminal Code (CC), and
    •    Failure to comply with Undertaking contrary to section 145(4)(a) CC.

The accused was issued a 90-day administrative drivers licence suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. The driver is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, Ont. on July 20, 2020.
