Traffic stop leads to impaired charges near Massey

SAGAMOK FIRST NATION - One person has been arrested and charged following a call for service in Sagamok First Nation.

On Feb. 24, 2024 shortly after 5 a.m., the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint on Ironwood Street in Sagamok First Nation.

Police located the vehicle of the traffic complaint on Sagamok Road and conducted a traffic stop. Upon speaking with the driver, police determined the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported back to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Cole Recollet, 19 years old from Birch Island, has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
  • Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on April 15, 2024.

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
