Traffic stop leads to drug charges for Iron Bridge driver

52-year-old arrested after officers seize suspected cocaine

TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE - On Dec. 3, 2022 shortly after 10 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver swerving all over the road and travelling westbound on Highway 17 from the Town of Webbwood.

At approximately 11 p.m., police observed the westbound car near the junction of Highway 17 and Highway 538 within the Town of Algoma Mills. A traffic stop was conducted. While speaking to the driver officers believed the driver to be impaired by drug and an arrest was subsequently made.  

Police searched the driver and located a small amount of suspected crack cocaine on his person. The vehicle was searched, and police located over 45 grams of suspected crack cocaine, over 200 grams of suspected cocaine (estimated value is $4,700) and drug paraphernalia.

As a result, Dwayne Kozuch, 51 years of age from Iron Bridge, was charged with:
    •    Possession of a Schedule I Substance - cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
    •    Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA (two counts)
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Jan. 5, 2023. The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.
