Traffic stop leads to drug charges

Further investigation after the stop, police learned the driver was on bail conditions not to possess or consume drugs

On June 11, 2020, at approximately 3:40 a.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting regular patrol duties on Westhill Road, Elliot Lake. 

A pick-up truck was observed to be parked in the middle of the road. Police conducted a traffic stop and spoke to the driver.  A pill bottle and white powder substance in small baggies could be seen near the cup-holder in the truck. After investigation it was learned the driver was currently released on previous bail conditions to not possess or consume drugs. Subsequently, the driver was arrested and charged.

David Jack (DJ) Willett, 30 years old, of Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA).

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake, Ontario on September 1, 2020.
