Traffic stop in Sault leads to arrest of Elliot Lake man

Police arrested an Elliot Lake man on an outstanding warrant after a traffic stop on Trunk Road in Sault Ste. Marie.

The OPP said a Jeep was stopped for speeding and the driver provided a false name when pulled over.

The full news release follows:

On Feb. 11 at approximately 2 p.m., the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting general patrol duties on Highway 17 just east of the city. 

A white Jeep was stopped for speeding on Trunk Road. The driver was spoken to who provided a false name to police. 

A passenger was identified who was the registered owner of the Jeep. 

After further investigation, police identified the driver and learned they were suspended from driving, there was a warrant out for their arrest from December 2022, and they were on previous release conditions from September 2022 to not have any contact with the passenger and not have care or control of a motor vehicle. 

The driver was subsequently arrested.

Peter Squires, 30, of Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Fail to comply with release order - other than to attend court (three counts), contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Drive motor vehicle - no currently validated permit, contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the HTA
  • Drive motor vehicle - no license, contrary to section 32(1) of the HTA
  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the HTA

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sault Ste. Marie.
