Traffic complaint on Highway 6 leads to impaired charges

One person has been arrested and charged with impaired driving following a traffic complaint.

On Nov. 18, 2023, shortly before 3 p.m., members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 6 in Assiginack Township.

Police located the vehicle and determined that the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested for impaired driving and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Samson Shawanda, 38 years old, from Keswick has been charged with:

  • operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
  • drive vehicle with cannabis in open original packaging

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on January 9, 2024.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
