Traffic complaint leads to impaired driving charge

On May 6, 2021 shortly after 1:45 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver on Hillside Drive North in the City of Elliot Lake.

Police located the car a short time later near the Collins Hall. Further investigation revealed that the driver had consumed suspected controlled substances. The accused was arrested and transported to the Espanola Detachment to conduct further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Jennifer Smith, 33 years of age from Elliot Lake, was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on June 1, 2021. The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

This incident marks the 12th driver charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the East Algoma Detachment area in 2021.
