Three people charged with impaired driving within 10 hours

The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police charged three people with impaired driving within 10 hours on July 15.

All three incidents took place in Espanola, from about 2 p.m. to nearly midnight.

Two people, Wesley Eshkakogan from Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation and Tammy Armstrong from Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, were charged with operation while impaired, while Leroy Esquimaux from Sudbury was charged with failing or refusing to comply with a demand he take a breathalyzer sobriety test.

All three are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola.

On July 15, 2022 the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged three individuals within 10 hours with impaired driving offences.

At approximately 2:10 p.m. members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the OPP were conducting general law enforcement duties in the town of Espanola. A traffic stop was conducted on a parked vehicle on Centre Street, in Espanola. 

The driver of the motor vehicle was arrested on an outstanding warrant. After further investigation, police determined the driver had consumed alcohol. An Approved Screening Device (ASD) was administered that resulted in a fail.

Wesley Eshkakogan, 28-years-old from Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation was charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired- Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation While Impaired- Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on September 12, 2022.

At approximately 8:05 p.m. members of Manitoulin OPP were conducting general law enforcement duties on Highway 17 in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

A traffic stop was conducted on Highway 17. Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined they had consumed alcohol. An ASD was administered that resulted in a fail and the driver was subsequently arrested.

Tammy Armstrong, 45-years-old from Sables-Spanish Rivers Township was charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired- Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC
  • Operation While Impaired- Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on September 12, 2022.

At approximately 11:50 p.m. Manitoulin OPP received a traffic complainant of a driver who had left a residence intoxicated. Police located the vehicle on Centre Street in the Town of Espanola.

Upon speaking with the driver, officers had determined they had consumed alcohol. An ASD demand was given, and the driver refused. The driver was subsequently arrested.

Leroy Esquimaux, 39-years-old from Sudbury was charged with failure or refusal to comply with demand, contrary to section 320.15(1) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on August 22, 2022.
