Threat complaint leads to assault, weapons charges near Espanola

A person on probation and a release order for weapons offences was arrested for assault with a weapon and firearms offences in Baldwin Township.

On March 7, 2023, at approximately 3:34 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment (Espanola) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a threat complaint at a residence on Highway 17.

During the investigation, police determined a person was assaulted and threatened with death. A firearm was also located by police and a cruiser was damaged by the person following their arrest.

Joshua Fraser, 33 years old, from Baldwin Township was charged with:

  • assault with a weapon
  • utter threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • failure to comply with release order other than to attend court
  • fail to comply with probation order
  • possess a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order - two counts
  • causing a disturbance
  • mischief under $5,000

The accused was released from custody following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear on April 17, 2023, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola.
