Suspicious guys with suitcase on MacFarlane turn out to have drugs: Police

Both suspects provided false names and one tried to evade police and resisted arrest, OPP say

Two suspects were arrested following a call from the public about suspicious activity on a street in Elliot Lake, according to the OPP.

On Aug. 26 at around 8 p.m., the East Algoma OPP say they received a call in relation to suspicious persons on MacFarlane Road.

The complainant reported two males were walking on the street and attended an address with a suitcase. 

Police arrived and spoke to the males. Officers recognized them and knew of numerous outstanding arrest warrants, according to police.  

Both provided false names and one tried to evade police and resisted arrest, the OPP said in a news release.

In their possession was over 70 grams of suspected Fentanyl, over 130 grams of suspected cocaine, digital scale, bottle of suspected Methylsulfonylmethane, and small plastic baggies, police allege.

Nash Mills, 26, of Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - Opioid (other than heroin)
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - Cocaine
  • Personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice (identity fraud)
  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Fail to comply with release order - other than to attend court (three counts)

A committal warrant was executed and the accused was subsequently taken directly to the Algoma Treatment & Remand Centre.

Christopher Mercer, 44, from Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance - Opioid (other than heroin)
  • Fail to comply with Probation Order
  • Obstruct Peace Officer

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on Aug. 27. 

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
