BLIND RIVER - March 14, 2018, shortly after 11 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver travelling eastbound on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River.

Police observed a vehicle matching the description leave a local gas station proceeding out of the parking lot via Industrial Park Road East. As it approached the intersection of Causley Street where there is a stop sign it signalled right and turned onto Causley without stopping. The vehicle continued in an easterly direction onto Highway 17 where a traffic stop was initiated near Woodlawn Drive.

After speaking to the male driver, the officer demanded a breath sample into a roadside screening device and the results came back negative. A driver's licence query revealed the male driver was suspended and the vehicle was towed.

As a result of the investigation, Shawn Potvin, 33 years of age from Walford, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Drive while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and with
  • Disobey stop sign - fail to stop, contrary to section 136(1)(a) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on May 16, 2018.
