Greater Sudbury police arrested a suspect in Tuesday’s attempted murder on Paris Street.

The arrest took place without incident in the area of Brady Street at Paris Street at approximately 11:30 a.m. Friday, and the suspect remains in custody.

The man has been charged with Attempt to Commit Murder, and will attend court on Saturday to answer to the charge.

The incident in question took place at approximately 3 p.m. on Aug. 22, when a man reportedly threw another man into traffic. A motorist narrowly missed the victim.

In a media release issued by Greater Sudbury Police Service on Tuesday, it’s noted that police have reasonable grounds to believe the incident is “hate-motivated.”

The matter has been assigned to detectives in the Major Crimes Section of the GSPS Criminal Investigations Division who are specially trained in hate crime and hate-bias/hate-motivated investigations.

“The Greater Sudbury Police Services recognizes that hate crimes and hate-bias incidents are extremely under-reported and we are working diligently to change that,” according to GSPS.

“We take reports of hate-motivated crime and hate-bias incidents very seriously and we recognize the impact and pain that ripples throughout the community when these incidents occur.”

Police are asking the victim of this incident and any witnesses in the area to come forward.

Anyone in the area of Paris Street between Cedar Street and Larch Street on Aug. 22, between 2:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. who might have witnessed the incident or have dash camera footage is asked to come forward.

Det.-Sgt. Robert Weston can be contacted at 705-675-9171 ext. 2341.

Due to evidence collected thus far, police are also concerned there may be other incidents involving the suspect which have not yet been reported.

The man is described as Caucasian, between the ages of 50-65 years of age, approximately 5'6" to 5'8" in height, approximately 160 lbs, with a long grey and white beard with brown hair. He was wearing a Blue Jays baseball cap, with an all-blue t-shirt and dark shorts.
