Police have charged a local resident after a debit card was stolen and used at several retail stores.

The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police said they made an arrest Jan. 1.

On Dec. 30, a resident on Axmith Avenue returned home to find their house had been broken into and multiple items stolen.

One of those items was a debit card in the homeowner's name.

Investigation revealed the card was fraudulently used at numerous retail locations in Elliot Lake, police said in a news release.

Video camera footage was obtained from the retail locations and a suspect was identified and later arrested, police said.

Tiffany Bernstein, 35, of Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Fraud under $5000 (three counts)
  • Use of credit card (three counts)
  • Possession of a credit card (three counts)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Feb. 8.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Bernstein is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
