Spike belt used, but suspect still managed to flee, says OPP

ESPANOLA - On June 21, 2020 at approximately 4:16 a.m. members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a break and enter to a home in Whitefish Falls.

Preliminary information revealed that the lone suspect [allegedly] forced their way into a residence then demanded the occupant turn over keys to their vehicle before fleeing the scene. The victim, who was not injured in the incident, immediately called 911.

Police observed a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle travelling at high speed northbound on Highway 6 into Espanola. The vehicle was observed entering a construction zone without any attempts to slow down. A spike belt was successfully deployed but the vehicle continued travelling. Shortly after, police located the vehicle parked in Espanola and the suspect surrendered.

As a result, Nicolas Cywink, 37 years old of Pickering, has been charged with:
    •    Break, enter a dwelling house with intent to commit indictable offence contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
    •    Theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle contrary to section 334(a) of the CC,
    •    Dangerous operation contrary to section 320.13(1) of the CC, and
    •    Driving while under suspension contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Aug. 10, 2020.
