Second-degree murder charge laid against Sagamok man

A 32-year-old Sagamok First Nation is facing a second-degree murder charge following a Sept. 24 assault that left another man dead.

Shortly before 6 a.m. on Sept. 24, Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police detachment officers were responded to an assault with a weapon on Sagamok Road in Sagamok First Nation.

“Upon arrival, police learned that one person received life-threatening injuries from an edged weapon and was transported to an area hospital by Sudbury-Manitoulin Paramedic Services,” police said. “The victim later died from those injuries.”

The victim was later identified as Sonny Toulouse, 46, of Sagamok.

A joint investigation involving the Espanola OPP Crime Unit and the Anishnabek Police Service, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Services and the OPP Forensic Identification Service, led to the arrest of a Sagamok First Nation resident.

Stevie Ray Southwind, 32, was arrested and is charged with:

  • Second Degree Murder, section 235(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Fail to comply with probation order, section 162.2(4) of the CC- three counts

Southwind was held for an Oct. 12 court appearance in Sudbury. None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
