Sables-Spanish Rivers Township man faces attempt murder charge after altercation

ESPANOLA - On Sunday, March 24, 2019, at approximately 8:04 p.m., members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with the assistance of the Sudbury-Manitoulin Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to an altercation at a residence on King Street in the Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers, Ontario.

With the assistance of the OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), the North East Region OPP Canine Unit (K9), the North East Region OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), the Manitoulin OPP Crime Unit, the OPP Crisis Negotiators, Critical Incident Command (CIC) and the North East Region OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS), a suspect has been arrested.

A 61-year-old male was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

As a result, 49-year-old Glenn Ward of Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, Ontario, has been charged with:

  • Attempt to Commit Murder, contrary to section 239(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Assault with a Weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the CC;
  • Mischief Under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC; and
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC.

The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, on March 25, 2019.
