Quebec truck driver accused of assaulting police near Iron Bridge

Traffic stop initiated after the accused nearly caused a head-on collision with another tractor trailer, police say

MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES - On Feb. 9, 2022, members from the OPP's Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) unit were on patrol duties on Highway 17 within the Municipality of Huron Shores.

Shortly after 8 a.m., police conducted a traffic stop of an eastbound tractor trailer. The truck was passing another vehicle and crossed into the eastbound lane, nearly causing a head-on collision with a westbound tractor trailer.

A subsequent traffic stop was conducted and the driver was spoken to. The driver provided a valid driver's licence but refused to surrender the vehicle documents. [It is alleged that] the driver became upset and proceeded to throw a log book at the officer.

The driver Martin Gauthier, 41 years of age from Sainte-Anne-Des-Plaines, Que., was arrested and charged with:
    •    Assault a peace officer with a weapon, contrary to section 270.01(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on April 7, 2022.
