Driver stopped for speeding, charges follow

The driver could not produce a valid driver's licence

ELLIOT LAKE - On Oct. 20, 2017, a member from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division (HSD) Sault Ste. Marie Unit was on regular patrol on Highway 108 south of the City of Elliot Lake.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., the officer observed a southbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 108 and a traffic stop was initiated. The driver could not produce a valid driver's licence and the investigation determined the driver was suspended. The vehicle was towed and impounded.

As a result of the investigation, Charles Lewis, 32 years of age from Serpent River First Nation, Ont. was charged with:

  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
  • Drive motor vehicle - no licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the HTA; and with
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Dec. 6, 2017.
