Police seize 40 grams of suspected cocaine, $53K in cash at Blind River traffic stop

BLIND RIVER – On May 4, 2020, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River.  

At approximately 9:48 p.m., police observed a westbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Causley Street and a traffic stop was initiated. The driver provided the officer with a false name and was arrested for impersonation with intent.  

Police observed in plain view a clear Ziploc baggie containing suspected cocaine. The vehicle was searched and officers located:  

  • Over 40 grams of suspected cocaine  
  • Over 10 grams of suspected crack cocaine  
  • Over one gram of suspected marijuana shatter, along with   
  • Drug paraphernalia, and 
  • Over $53,000 in Canadian currency   

As a result of the investigation, Kenneth Cobbs, age 54 of Sudbury, was charged with: 

  • Personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution, or obstruct justice (identity fraud), contrary to section 403(1)(d) of the Criminal Code (CC), 
  • Three counts of operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the CC,  
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC,  
  • Two counts for possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking-Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and with  
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act.   

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on July 2, 2020.
