Police respond to report of a fight, lay impaired and possession charges

A 'significant number' of suspected methamphetamines were found in the pocket of one accused, police say

On Aug. 5, 2019 at 1:45 a.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police members received a call of a fight on Johnson Place in the City of Elliot Lake, Ont.

Police arrived a short time after to find a male laying on the ground in the middle of the street and another male standing overtop of him. There was also a pickup truck in the street running with the lights on. 

Police separated the two males and spoke to the female driver of the pickup truck. A strong odour of alcoholic beverage was [allegedly] detected emanating from her breath. She was subsequently arrested, driver's license suspended, and vehicle was impounded. 

It was also learned that one of the males was currently breaching prior conditions from a release document as a result of previous charges. While arresting the male, a significant number of suspected methamphetamines were found in his pocket. 

Nakita Cardinal, 21 years of age, from Schumacher, Ont., was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Sept. 3, 2019

Thomas Reeves, 48 years of age, from Schumacher, Ont., was charged with:

  • Fail to comply with undertaking (two counts), contrary to section 145(3) of the CC,
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA).

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River, Ont. on Aug. 5, 2019.
