ESPANOLA – Police say they have made an arrest in an historical assault investigation related to an incident alleged to have taken place more than four years ago.

According to police, on March 6, 2019, shortly after 5 a.m., the Manitoulin OPP and Sudbury-Manitoulin Paramedic Services responded to an assault on Old Webbwood Road in Espanola.

The victim was operating a taxi when they were assaulted by the person they were transporting, the OPP said.

The taxi driver sustained minor injuries. Police were unable to locate the suspect, who had fled on foot.

The Manitoulin OPP Crime Unit continued the investigation, receiving a lead in July 2023, which later led to an arrest.

Ivan Shane, 60, of Sudbury has been charged with aggravated assault.

Shane is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Dec. 4.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Shane is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
