Police find vehicle in ditch, 'partially on fire'

MASSEY - On May 2, 2020 at approximately 5:40 a.m., officers from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) encountered a single motor vehicle collision (MVC) partially on fire in the ditch and a person standing outside the vehicle on Highway 17, Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

Sables-Spanish Rivers Fire Department and Sudbury-Manitoulin Emergency Medical Services (EMS), assisted with the fire and treated the sole occupant for minor injuries.

OPP determined the driver was not the lawful owner of the motor vehicle and had been consuming alcohol and as a result of the investigation, a 16-year-old youth, was charged with the following:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),  
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand, contrary to section 320.15(1) of the CC,
  • Theft of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 333.1 of the CC,
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, contrary to section 355(a) of the CC, and
  • Use of Credit Card contrary to section 342(1)(c) of the CC.

The youth cannot be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola in July 2020.
