OPP ram door open after responding to domestic disturbance

Police say the victim was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants

On October 7, 2020 shortly after 9:15 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic disturbance where yelling was occurring in an apartment on Elizabeth Walk in the City of Elliot Lake.

Police attended the complex and could hear whispering inside the apartment. Police banged on the door several times with no response. Officers used a ram to breach the door and observed a person sitting on a bed and the other hiding in a washroom. 

Investigation determined, the victim was physically assaulted several times. The accused in the washroom was in breach of conditions not to communicate with the victim. A query revealed the victim had warrants for her arrest.   

As a result of the investigation, the 23-year-old victim from Elliot Lake, was arrested on the strength of three warrants and was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and released into police custody.

The victim was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Nov. 3, 2020.

A 23-year-old, from Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Assault - spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
  • Four counts of fail to comply with release order - other than to attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on Oct. 8, 2020, and was remanded into custody.
