One dead in fiery head-on crash in Sudbury

SUDBURY - On Dec. 22, 2019 at approximately 9 p.m., members from the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Detachment and the Northeast Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with Sudbury Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Greater Sudbury Fire Services and the Greater Sudbury Police Service responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 17 just east of Long Lake Road, City of Greater Sudbury, Ont.

Investigation revealed an eastbound motorcycle crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a westbound pickup truck. Both vehicles caught fire on impact.

The motorcycle driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The lone occupant in the pickup truck was not injured.

The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed.

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Collision Investigator (TCI).

Highway 17 between Regional Road 55 and Highway 69 was closed for approximately five hours.
