MISSISSAUGA FIRST NATION - Shortly after 5:00 p.m., on Nov. 25, 2020, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and a member from the Mississauga First Nation Police Service responded to a two vehicle motor vehicle collision at the junction of Highway 557 and Max's Road within the Territory of Mississauga First Nation.
Investigation determined, a small red pick-up truck was crossing Highway 557 from Max's Road when it sideswiped a black pick-up truck travelling northbound on Highway 17 causing it to enter the ditch. The red pick-up truck left the scene and entered the Mississauga First Nation Pow Wow grounds where the driver fled on foot.
A short time later police located a person walking and confirmed the person to be the driver of the red pick-up truck. Police determined the driver had consumed alcohol.
As a result of the investigation, Lisa Tanner, age 43, from Mississauga First Nation was charged with:
- Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
- Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC;
- Failure to stop after accident, contrary to section to section 320.16(1) of the CC;
- Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the CC; and with
- Take motor vehicle without consent, contrary to section 335(1) of the CC.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Jan. 7, 2020.
No injuries were sustained by either driver.
Both vehicles were towed and the red pick-up was impounded for seven days.
