Officers locate several firearm parts, ammunition during search

Sept. 13 update:
On Sept. 12, 2022, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) executed a search warrant for firearms at a residence on Ste. Camillus Crescent in Elliot Lake.

On Sept. 10, 2022, police were called to a family dispute at that residence. One person was arrested and charged accordingly.

The OPP's Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), Canine Unit, and the East Algoma Crime Unit assisted with the investigation. Several firearm parts and ammunition were located.

Sept. 12 OPP news release:
On Sept. 10, 2022 at approximately 4 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a family dispute at a residence on Ste. Camillus Crescent in Elliot Lake.

The complainant reported being assaulted by a known family member. After further investigation, it was also learned there were previous offences that had taken part over a period of time. Police subsequently arrested one person at the residence.

Jason Holyj, 44 years old of Elliot Lake, was charged with:
    •    Assault causing bodily harm, contrary to section 267(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Assault (three counts), contrary to section 266 of the CC
    •    Assault with a weapon (three counts), contrary to section 267(a) of the CC
    •    Assault peace officer, contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the CC
    •    Uttering threats (three counts) - Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC
    •    Forcible confinement (two counts), contrary to section 279(2) of the CC
    •    Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order (two counts), contrary to section 117.01(1) of the CC
    •    Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC
    •    Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 86(1) of the CC
    •    Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sault Ste. Marie on Sept. 12, 2022.
