A person is facing impaired driving charges after an officer on patrol spotted a white Jeep flipped over in a Gore Bay ditch.

Ontario Provincial Police say it happened just after 1 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Water Street and Main Street.

“Police spoke to the driver who was standing at the side of the road and it was determined they had been consuming alcoholic beverages,” OPP said in a news release.

“The driver was arrested for impaired driving and returned to the Gore Bay OPP detachment for further tests.”

Eric Marchand, 37, was charged with operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs and failure or refusal to comply with a demand.

In addition, the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the Jeep was impounded for seven days.

OPP say this was one of five people arrested for impaired driving Friday and Saturday by the Manitoulin Detachment.

Manitoulin OPP has laid 42 impaired driving charges so far this year.

“Drivers are reminded that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan not to drive,” said OPP.

“Instead, arrange for a designated driver or take a taxi.”

Anyone who spots what they suspect is an impaired driver is asked to call 911.
