Multiple calls lead to impaired driving charges in Espanola

One person has been arrested and charged with impaired driving.

On Nov. 3, 2023 shortly after 3 p.m., members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received multiple calls regarding a possible impaired driver on Church Street in Espanola.

Police patrolled the area and were able to locate the unoccupied vehicle on Watson Street.

Further patrols were conducted, and police were able to later locate the driver of the vehicle. Police were able to determine that the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages and the driver was subsequently arrested for impaired driving.

As a result of the investigation, Kurtis von Scheunemann, 42 years old from Baldwin Township, has been charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
    •    Failure or refusal to comply with demand

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Dec. 4, 2023.
