BLIND RIVER - A British Columbia resident has been charged after police found suspected marijuana and magic mushrooms in a vehicle that had been stopped for speeding.

Officers from the  East Algoma OPP were on patrol in Blind River on Oct. 8 when, shortly after 9:30 a.m., they observed an eastbound minivan travelling at a high rate of speed, the OPP said in a news release.

Police initiated a traffic stop and while speaking to the driver "detected a strong odour of cannabis marijuana and observed the cannabis marijuana to be readily available to the driver," according to police.

The vehicle was searched, and police allege they located more than 15 grams of suspected cannabis, and two sealed bags containing more than 45 grams of suspected psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms.

As a result, Ken Matsuda, 37, of Campbell River, B.C., was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule III Substance
  • Drive Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available
  • Speeding

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Dec. 7.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Matsuda is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
