Manitoulin OPP lay 32nd impaired driving charge of 2023

ESPANOLA, ON - The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has laid 32 impaired driving charges since Jan. 1, 2023.

On June 16, 2023, shortly before 5 a.m., Manitoulin OPP was conducting general patrol on Highway 17 in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township when they initiated a traffic stop.

The driver was unable to continue driving and contacted another person to pick them up. It was determined that the second driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages and was arrested for impaired driving, then transported to the OPP detachment for further tests.

As a result of the investigation, Andrea Trudeau, 52-years-of-age, from Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Aug. 21, 2023.

On June 16, 2023, shortly before 7 a.m., Manitoulin OPP responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township.

Upon police arrival, it was determined that the driver had been consuming drugs and was subsequently arrested for impaired driving. The passenger of the vehicle was arrested for an outstanding warrant.

A search of the individuals, located drugs, suspected to be opioid.

Both occupants were transported back to the OPP detachment.

As a result of the investigation, the driver, Beyonce Dickson, 19-years-of-age, from Sudbury was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Possession of schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin)
  • Trafficking in schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin)

Kayla Guy-Denis, 30 years old, from Sudbury was charged with possession of schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin).

Both accused persons were released and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on July 5, 2023.

On June 20, 2023, shortly before 12 a.m., Manitoulin OPP was conducting general patrol on Highway 17 in Nairn Township when they observed a vehicle parked on the shoulder.

Police approached the vehicle and observed the occupants sleeping inside. It was determined the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages.

The driver was arrested for impaired driving and transported to the OPP detachment for further tests.

As a result of the investigation, Mohammed Syed, 24-years-of-age, from Cambridge was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on July 5, 2023.

The OPP would like to remind the public that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving. If you observe a suspected impaired driver, please call 9-1-1 immediately and report it.
