Manitoulin OPP lay 2 impaired charges in separate incidents

The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police say they arrested two motorists for impaired driving on the evening of April 21 in separate incidents.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday, officers initiated a traffic stop on Highway 6 in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands.

Officers determined the driver had been consuming alcohol and they were arrested and returned to detachment for further tests.

Ruben Bredin, 27, from Little Current was charged with operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on May 17.

Police say shortly before 7:40 p.m. the same evening, officers responded to a traffic complaint of a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township.

Police located the vehicle in Nairn-Hyman Township and determined the driver had been consuming alcohol. They were subsequently arrested and returned to detachment for further tests, the OPP said in a news release.

Jodie Bernice Portelance, 39, from Onaping was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Having liquor in open container in unauthorized place

Both drivers are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on June 12.

The two drivers had their vehicles impounded for seven days and had their licences suspended for 90 days, police said.
