The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has laid 50 impaired driving charges since January 1, 2023.

On August 6, 2023, shortly after 2:00 a.m., the Manitoulin OPP responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 6 in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands.

Police attended the scene and confirmed there were no injuries to the occupants of the vehicle. Upon speaking with the driver, police determined the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and transported back to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, a 33-year-old from Sudbury has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Dangerous operation

The accused was released and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on September 13, 2023.

The accused was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 7 days.
