According to a news release, on July 9, shortly before noon, Manitoulin OPP and the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service (UCCM) responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver leaving a residence in Whitefish River First Nation.

Police located the vehicle at a store on Manitowaning Road in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands, the OPP said.

Police said it was determined the driver had been consuming alcohol and was arrested for impaired driving. The driver was returned to the Little Current detachment for further tests.

Daniel Pitawanakwat, 49, from Birch Island was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while prohibited by the Criminal Code

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Sept. 13.

The driver's vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The Manitoulin Detachment of OPP said it has laid 38 impaired driving charges since Jan. 1.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
