Two additional charges have been brought against a man already accused in connection with a shooting death on Hills Trail in Wikwemikong Unceded Territory.

Tyran Armstrong, 18, of M'Chigeeng First Nation was arrested and charged in February with first-degree murder, according to a news release from the Manitoulin Detachment of Ontario Provincial Police. As a result of the ongoing investigation, two additional charges were laid contrary to the Criminal Code on June 29:

  • Pointing a firearm, section 87
  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, section 95(1)

It was previously reported that on Feb. 19, shortly before 1:40 a.m., members of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service, the Manitoulin OPP, the Sagamok Detachment of the Anishinabek Police Service, and the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service (UCCM) responded to a shooting on Hills Trail in Wikwemikong Unceded Territory (WTPS).

Upon arrival, police learned that one person was shot, and the suspect had fled the scene. The injured person died as a result of their injuries. A shelter in place of safety was initiated, but lifted once the suspect was in custody.

The accused is scheduled to appear virtually before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on July 12.

The Manitoulin OPP Crime Unit, OPP North East Region Forensic Identification Services, UCCM Crime Unit, and the WTPS are continuing this investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
