Manitoulin ATV operator charged with impaired driving

The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has arrested and charged an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) driver with impaired driving.

On Aug. 24, 2023 shortly before 4 p.m., the Manitoulin OPP responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver on Highway 542 in Gordon Township on Manitoulin Island. It was reported that an ATV was driving erratically along the highway.

Police located the ATV parked in a driveway near where the traffic complaint was reported. Upon speaking with the driver, it was determined the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and transported to the Gore Bay OPP detachment for further tests.

As a result of the investigation, Cade McCurdy, 21 years old from Gore Bay, was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
    •    Driving while under suspension
    •    Fail to wear proper helmet
    •    Novice driver - BAC above zero

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Sept. 27, 2023.

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension.
