Man faces numerous charges following family dispute: police

Charges include assault peace officer, forcible confinement, and unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm

On Sept. 10, 2022 at approximately 4 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a family dispute at a residence on Ste. Camillus Crescent in Elliot Lake.

The complainant reported being assaulted by a known family member. After further investigation, it was also learned there were previous offences that had taken part over a period of time. Police subsequently arrested one person at the residence.

Jason Holyj, 44 years old of Elliot Lake, was charged with:
    •    Assault causing bodily harm, contrary to section 267(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Assault (three counts), contrary to section 266 of the CC
    •    Assault with a weapon (three counts), contrary to section 267(a) of the CC
    •    Assault peace officer, contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the CC
    •    Uttering threats (three counts) - Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC
    •    Forcible confinement (two counts), contrary to section 279(2) of the CC
    •    Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order (two counts), contrary to section 117.01(1) of the CC
    •    Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC
    •    Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 86(1) of the CC
    •    Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sault Ste. Marie on Sept. 12, 2022.
