Mail theft leads to arrest in Espanola

33-year-old faces multiple charges as a result

One person has been arrested and charged with multiple offences following a report of a theft on Albert Street in Espanola.

On Nov. 29, 2023 shortly after 3 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call regarding the theft of mail. Police were directed to a compound where the suspect was last seen. Police searched an outbuilding that was on the property and located the individual inside.

As a result of the investigation, Jordan Lamothe, 33 years old from Espanola, was charged with:
    •    Mischief - renders property dangerous, useless, inoperative or ineffective
    •    Theft from mail - sent by post (two counts)
    •    Break, enter a place - commit indictable offence
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Jan. 15, 2024.
