Local man charged after alleged threats with 'an edged weapon'

On March 7, 2018 at approximately 9:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Elliot Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex on Mississauga Avenue in the City of Elliot Lake, Ont.

Investigation determined that a male was acting in an irate manner in the hallway. He was (allegedly) threatening to cause harm to another male with an edged weapon. The threatening male then retreated back into his apartment and locked the door.

On March 8, 2018, the male was subsequently arrested and charged.

The OPP's Emergency Response Team (ERT), Canine Unit, East Algoma Crime Unit and Northeast Region Support Team assisted with the investigation.

Brad Southwind, 22 years of age of Elliot Lake, Ont. was charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC,
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice video remand Court in Sault Ste. Marie on March 15, 2018.
