SUDBURY – Police say the onboard GPS of a vehicle stolen in Sault Ste. Marie helped the owner track the thief and assist police in making an arrest.

Police said shortly after 8 a.m., officers from the Nipissing West OPP responded to reports of a stolen vehicle on Highway 17 in the City of Greater Sudbury.

The vehicle had been stolen earlier this morning from a residence in the Sault and was being tracked by the owner from the vehicle's internal Global Position System (GPS), police said.

"The GPS advised that the vehicle was traveling on a highway in the Sudbury area and was located and stopped by police; the driver was then arrested," police said in a news release.

A search of the vehicle located break-and-enter tools and drugs suspected to be oxycodone, police allege.

Reno White, 22, of Sault Ste. Marie is charged with:

  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000 - in Canada
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Opioid (other than heroin)
  • Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court - two counts
  • Fail to comply with Probation Order
  • Possession break-in instruments

The accused was held for bail court and is scheduled to appear today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
