Hitchhiker charged after police see him drinking a beer

TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE - On May 1, 2018, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police were on patrol duties on Highway 17 within the Township of the North Shore near the junction of Highways 17 and 108. 

Shortly after 12 p.m., police observed a male sitting on the south side of Highway 17 leaning against a road sign hitchhiking near the junction of Highways 17 and 108. As police drove by, officers observed the male take a drink out of a tallboy can of beer. 

The officers stopped and approached the hitchhiker, they observed one partially opened can of beer that had been drank and one that remained sealed in a plastic bag.  

As a result of the investigation, Kevin Cardinal, 31 years of age from Etobicoke, Ont. was issued a provincial offence notice and charged with: having liquor in open container in other than licenced premises, residence or private place contrary to section 31(2) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The cans of beer were seized to prevent continuation of the offence and were disposed of locally.
