Police say a store employee was assaulted Friday evening in Elliot Lake after confronting a woman they suspected was shoplifting.

The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police say they were called to the grocery store on Hillside Drive South at around 6:30 p.m.

The complainant reported a female had items in her possession and departed the store without paying for them.

A store employee confronted the woman regarding the theft and was subsequently assaulted, police said in a news release.

Police attended and arrested the female.

Michelle Davis, 49, of Elliot Lake, is charged with:

  • Theft under $5,000 - shoplifting
  • Assault

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on April 11.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Davis is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
