No signal, speeding brings impaired charges near Bruce Mines

MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES — On June 2, 2022, shortly after 10:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties near Duff Road and Highway 17 in the Municipality of Huron Shores (west of Bruce Mines).

Police observed a car travelling eastbound on Highway 17 and turn northbound onto Hopper Road failing to signal. The car continued onto Hopper Road at a high rate of speed and turned onto Ansonia Road in an eastbound direction, again failing to signal. 

A traffic stop was initiated between Hopper Road and Scheuermann Highway. While speaking to the driver officers determined alcohol had been consumed. The driver was arrested and transported to Thessalon detachment where further testing was conducted.

As a result, Matthew Valiquette, 35 years of age was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation while impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC
  • Fail to signal for turn, contrary to section 142(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on July 7, 2022.

The driver was issued a 90-day administration drivers licence suspension and the car was impounded for seven days.
