Espanola traffic stop results in impaired driving charges

Driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension; the vehicle was impounded for seven days

One person has been arrested and charged following a traffic stop in Espanola.

On April 8, 2024 shortly after 8 p.m., the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting general patrol in the Town of Espanola. Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on James Street for a Highway Traffic Act violation

Upon speaking with the driver, police were able to determine the driver was impaired. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Sydney Baird, 26 years old from Baldwin Township, has been charged with:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance - two counts
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on May 6, 2024.
