Elliot Lake snowmobile driver charged

A snowmobile operator initially failed to stop for officers on the lake, but was later caught on the trail

On Feb. 4, 2018, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) were conducting motorized snow vehicle (MSV) patrols on the trails and lakes in the Elliot Lake area. 

At approximately 3 p.m., officers were checking snowmobiles and fishermen on Esten Lake. A snowmobile (that) had initially failed to stop for officers on the lake was later caught on the trail. The lone male operator was subsequently arrested. After investigation, officers learned the male did not have driver's licence and was breaching numerous release conditions.    

Desi Newton, 39 years of age of Elliot Lake, Ont., was charged with:

  • Driving while disqualified - court order (five counts), contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Fail to comply with recognizance, contrary to section 145(3) of the CC,
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC.

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River, Ont. on Feb. 13, 2018.
